Allentown Airport was first opened to air traffic back in 1929. Scheduled passenger airline service began in 1935. In this time period, the hangar was also used as the passenger terminal. The first building specifically designed as a passeger terminal was eected in 1938. The airport operated numerous commercial flights in this era. In 1948, the Lehigh Airport Authority was created. This organization enabled the Allentown airport to be considered a public enterprise. The next passenger terminal opened its doors in 1950. This terminal was in operation for well over twenty years before the most recent airport terminal opened its doors in late 1975.
